Cloves
Cloves come from a type of evergreen tree that grows in and around the Indian Ocean. These trees produce a flower bud that is then dried. This dried clove bud is highly aromatic and prized in many types of cuisine.
But we're here for the drinks.
Cloves are used for their spicy sweetness in savory drink recipes. Be careful as cloves are very strong and only a pinch of powdered cloves or one whole one is sufficient for one or two drinks.
Mulled wine is one example where whole cloves are steeped with other spices in hot wine. You will also find cloves either whole or powdered in Hot Buttered Rum, Hot Toddies, Tom and Jerrys, and Wassail.
A standard Grog is also a good place to use cloves which go well with lime juice and a nice aged rum preferably from a wooden still. Add one whole clove while muddling the lime.
Have you had an overpowering clove experience?
